What Are the Symptoms of Listeria Infection?
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can grow even at colder temperatures. Intestinal symptoms usually start within 24 hours of eating contaminated food, and can last between one and three days.
In healthy individuals, listeria infection can cause flu-like symptoms including stomach ache, diarrhea, fever, stiff muscles, and headache.
[3]
The very young, old, and people with compromised immune systems are at risk of more severe illness.
In pregnant individuals, infection with listeria can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or a life-threatening infection for the newborn.
If you believe you ate food contaminated with listeria but don’t feel ill, there’s no reason to seek treatment.
